Investigating Ali’s activity had yielded no results. The account for @NewFairyQueen hadn’t been active since the night before Roman’s murder. At Hakim’s suggestion, Lexi had contacted cavali cops in St. Louis and instructed them to increase their patrols to watch for vampire attacks on civilians. As for her own police force, Lexi didn’t know who she could trust. She’d continued her investigation from the privacy of Esme’s house, and Thaddeus’s watchful presence was an added comfort.

Sometime around dinner – she’d lost all track of time – Lexi met with Hakim and Ada at the Capiti to fill them in on her lack of progress. Ada hadn’t noticed anything suspicious from the conjuri. Hakim hadn’t heard anything new from the paranormal leaders either. They were out of leads.

Then Joe called.

As Lexi waited for the nymph to arrive outside the grungy storefronts, she wondered about his choice of a rendezvous. This wasn’t a good part of town, particularly at night. The houses running off the main street were in disrepair, and chain fences barricaded any home where the inhabitants had a television set visible through the windows. Lexi missed her police uniform more than ever, but she kept alert as she paced back and forth in the light illuminating the stores’ shared parking lot.

Finally, Joe’s Jeep pulled in to park. He left it running and didn’t get out. After a brief debate with herself, Lexi hurried to climb in. Once the door was closed, she looked at Joe questioningly.

He kept his hands on the steering wheel. “You aren’t going to believe this.” His hands were trembling.

“What?”

He sniffed and scratched his sweaty face, and in the streetlights Lexi could see his eyes were redder than ever.

“Joe, you okay?”

“Yeah, just took a big hit of vamp blood earlier. I’m fine.” His hands still shook.

Shit. He’s addicted.

“Joe…”

“We don’t have a lot of time.” He put the Jeep in reverse and pulled back out of the parking space, then turned west onto the main road. “You know how we paranormals for the Order meet at Marybeth’s with Owen? Well, the rebels have started their own meetings.”

Lexi looked out at the night streets. “That’s where we’re going?”

“Aye. It’s also the safe house where our fairy suspects are hiding.”

Holy shit.

Joe drove down a few side streets, heading deeper into the west side of town, before pulling to the curb and turning off the Jeep. “We’d better walk the rest of the way, but we need to hurry.” His gaze was jumpy. “You got a weapon?”

Lexi patted her coat where the holstered gun created a bulge. “Should I call for backup? I can call paranormal cops here ASAP. Or Loukas’s teams.”

We could get the ringleaders all at once! I’d like more information before we charge in, but–

“There’s no time.” Joe shook his head. “We might already be too late to get into a position to eavesdrop.”

“But with more men, we could capture–”

“If you arrest them, they won’t talk, and hundreds more would carry on with the rebellion. Besides, they’d fight to the death.
